Somalia’s House of the People, the lower chamber of the Federal Parliament, has overwhelmingly passed a landmark bill aimed at enhancing the protection and rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs), lawmakers confirmed on Saturday.
During a parliamentary session held earlier in the day, the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Bill was approved with strong support—136 members voted in favor, four opposed, and none abstained.
The legislation seeks to establish a comprehensive legal framework to support and integrate IDPs across Somalia, addressing the needs of millions displaced by conflict, climate-related disasters, and ongoing insecurity.
“This bill reflects our unwavering commitment to uphold the dignity and rights of our displaced citizens,” said a representative of the parliamentary leadership.
With the lower house’s endorsement secured, the bill now moves to the Upper House for further review. If approved, it will be signed into law by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
