Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre officially bid farewell to outgoing Swedish Ambassador Joachim Waern on Wednesday during a meeting held in Mogadishu. The Prime Minister commended Ambassador Waern for his significant contributions to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation between Somalia and Sweden.

In a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, PM Barre expressed gratitude for Waern’s dedicated service, noting his pivotal role in enhancing diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian ties between the two nations.

“Ambassador Waern has played a crucial role in deepening our bilateral relationship. His tenure was marked by strong humanitarian support, development cooperation, and consistent diplomatic engagement that supported Somalia’s recovery and growth,” said Prime Minister Barre.

He emphasized Somalia’s commitment to sustaining and expanding its partnership with Sweden, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in achieving national goals related to peacebuilding, resilience, and sustainable development.

During Ambassador Waern’s tenure, Sweden emerged as a steadfast partner in key areas such as peacebuilding, education, climate resilience, and women’s empowerment. Swedish-funded initiatives have supported displaced communities, strengthened institutional capacity at both federal and regional levels, and promoted inclusive governance.

Ambassador Waern, in his remarks, expressed appreciation for the collaboration and hospitality extended to him by the Somali government and people. He reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to remaining a close ally and development partner to Somalia.

The farewell meeting underscored Somalia’s ongoing efforts to engage with international partners in pursuit of shared development objectives, economic reform, and long-term stability amid persistent security challenges.

Prime Minister Barre reiterated Somalia’s readiness to deepen diplomatic ties with Sweden, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as economic development, healthcare, education, and poverty reduction—efforts aimed at improving the lives of the Somali people.
