MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia officially commenced its two-year term as a member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic engagement on the global stage.
The Horn of Africa nation is one of five newly elected members for the 2025-2026 term, alongside Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama. This group of nations will serve on the 15-member council, which is responsible for addressing matters of international peace and security.
Somalia takes over from Mozambique, filling the third seat designated for African nations on the Security Council. It joins Algeria and Sierra Leone, the other two African members currently serving on the council. The inclusion of Somalia reflects its growing international profile and its continued efforts to contribute to global peace and security efforts.
As Somalia steps into this pivotal role, it will be tasked with participating in critical decisions affecting global stability, including conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and addressing humanitarian crises. The country’s tenure on the UNSC will be closely watched as it navigates its diplomatic responsibilities amid complex international challenges.
