The African Union has committed $10 million in emergency funding to kickstart its latest peace initiative in Somalia, the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in response to mounting security threats and budgetary strain.
This funding decision was adopted during the AU Executive Council’s 47th session, held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. The money will come from the Union’s Emergency Contingency Reserve Fund.
AU representatives said the funds will help establish AUSSOM’s operations following the conclusion of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) earlier this year. AUSSOM is set to take on the task of sustaining peace efforts and aiding in Somalia’s stabilization process.
“The mission faces significant financial and security hurdles, and this allocation is vital to helping AUSSOM carry out its responsibilities,” read a statement from the AU. The Union also appealed to international partners for additional financial and political support.
AUSSOM officially began operations in early 2025. Its primary objectives include consolidating peace in previously contested areas, facilitating state-building led by Somali authorities, and countering the ongoing threat posed by Al-Shabaab.
AU officials stressed that continued international backing is essential to preserve gains made under ATMIS and to prevent setbacks that could destabilize Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa region.
