With just one day remaining before the highly anticipated event in Kenya, the High Court has annulled an agreement between the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF), throwing the organization of the 2025 World Rally Championship (WRC) into uncertainty.
According to a media report by Citizen Digital, Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Anne Nyoike ruled that the agreement, signed on January 25, 2025, by suspended KMSF Chairman Maina Muturi, is legally invalid. The court found that it was executed in defiance of an existing order barring him from managing the federation’s affairs.
“The agreement executed by the respondent is null and void due to lack of legal basis,” the ruling stated.
Muturi has been given seven days to explain why he should not be held in civil contempt for violating court orders. He has also been ordered to appear in court on March 25 to answer the contempt charges.
The case was brought by KMSF Director James Kahumbura, who argued that Muturi acted beyond his authority. The court upheld this claim, noting that Muturi failed to challenge the restraining order or provide any justification for his actions.
With the WRC event scheduled for March 20–23, the court’s decision has raised significant concerns about the event’s organization, leaving stakeholders in limbo and uncertain about the next steps
