Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab was officially sworn in as the new Governor of the Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu on Wednesday night during a formal handover ceremony held at Mogadishu City Hall.

In a compelling address, Mayor Muungaab reflected on his previous term in office, particularly highlighting his role in the reconstruction of the municipal headquarters. He expressed a strong commitment to revitalizing governance structures and improving public services across the capital.

During the ceremony, Muungaab unveiled a nine-point agenda that will guide his administration. The plan prioritizes improved security, support for electoral processes, enhanced service delivery, and a renewed focus on transparency and accountability.

The inauguration marks Muungaab’s official return to the mayoral office, following his appointment on May 28, 2025. He succeeds Mohamed Ahmed Amiir and previously served as mayor from February 2014 to October 2015. His reappointment follows a recommendation from the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation.

The handover event is being held at the Banadir Regional Administration headquarters and is attended by senior government officials, including Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

Dr. Muungaab brings a wealth of experience to the role. In addition to his earlier tenure as mayor, he served as Chief of the Military Court from August 2010 to February 2014 and later as State Minister for Justice. His leadership background, particularly in security and judicial reform, is seen as vital for addressing the complex challenges Mogadishu faces today.

The newly appointed mayor is expected to introduce strategic initiatives aimed at improving urban security and expanding access to essential public services such as waste management, water supply, road infrastructure, and other critical areas impacting daily life.

Residents of Mogadishu are hopeful that Muungaab’s leadership will usher in a new era of progress and stability. With his experience and renewed vision, there is growing optimism that the capital will see meaningful development and improved quality of life in the months ahead.

As the new administration takes shape, expectations are high for Mayor Muungaab to deliver on his commitments and foster a safer, more inclusive, and prosperous Mogadishu for all.
