Former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been conferred with Kenya’s highest civilian honour, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), during a ceremony held at State House Nairobi on Tuesday.
In his tribute, President William Ruto praised Ban’s distinguished public service career spanning over five decades, lauding his unwavering commitment to global peace, sustainable development, and human dignity.
“As the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, you distinguished yourself as a bridge-builder and a champion of the world’s most vulnerable,” President Ruto said. “Your visionary leadership placed climate change at the forefront of the global agenda—beginning with the 2007 Climate Change Summit and continuing through sustained diplomatic efforts that mobilized unprecedented international action. Your legacy continues to inspire us as we confront the harsh realities of a changing climate here in Africa.”
The President emphasized that Kenya is proud to honour Ban for his lifetime of service to humanity, adding that the award reflects the country’s deep appreciation for his vision, dedication, and enduring global impact.
President Ruto also highlighted Ban’s pivotal role in elevating climate change as a central issue on the international stage. He credited Ban’s leadership during the 2007 Climate Change Summit and the subsequent momentum for laying the foundation of ongoing global cooperation—efforts that still resonate in Africa’s current climate response strategies.
Reflecting on Ban’s tenure at the helm of the UN, President Ruto noted several milestones, including strengthening the institution’s capacity to address complex global crises such as food insecurity, energy shortages, and pandemics.
“Your successful appeals for more resources during the global financial crisis helped shield millions from hardship,” he said. “And your steadfast commitment to the Millennium Development Goals brought real, measurable progress—particularly for Africa.”
The President also applauded Ban’s passionate advocacy for gender equality and human rights, citing his instrumental role in the establishment of UN Women and his efforts to end violence against women.
“These are lasting legacies of your belief that true development must be inclusive and just,” Ruto added.
Later in the day, Ban is scheduled to take part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Global Centre on Adaptation’s new African headquarters in Nairobi. President Ruto described the upcoming centre as “a symbol of shared resilience and Kenya’s ongoing commitment to building a secure, climate-resilient future.”
