Mogadishu, Somalia – The Disaster Response Agency, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Somalia, convened a high-level forum focused on climate resilience, renewable energy, and water sustainability. The gathering brought together key stakeholders to enhance partnerships and mobilize resources aimed at addressing the growing climate crisis in Somalia.

Held in Mogadishu, the forum emphasized the need to strengthen climate resilience, promote clean energy solutions, and develop sustainable water management strategies. These initiatives are vital for safeguarding Somali communities from the devastating effects of climate-related disasters such as droughts and floods, which continue to impact livelihoods across the country.
During his address, the agency’s Commissioner, Mr. Mahmoud Moaallin Abdulle, underscored the urgency of integrating climate adaptation into national policies and forging meaningful collaborations to mitigate environmental risks. Discussions centered on long-term strategies for harnessing renewable energy sources and implementing efficient water conservation measures.
Experts and policymakers at the forum explored innovative ways to expand access to solar and wind energy while enhancing water security to support agriculture, livestock, and human consumption, particularly in drought-prone rural regions. The dialogue also highlighted the importance of investments in infrastructure to ensure sustainable water distribution and access to clean drinking water.
The event attracted participation from government representatives, academia, civil society organizations, and private sector leaders. Among the distinguished attendees were Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Mr. Abdullahi Bidhaan, and Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Lieutenant General Bashir Mohamed Jama, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling climate change through multi-sectoral cooperation.
UNDP Somalia representatives reiterated their ongoing support for Somalia’s climate resilience efforts, emphasizing the critical role of international partnerships and funding in implementing sustainable solutions.
