Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has firmly distanced itself from a planned event by the Somaliland Liaison Office in Nairobi, reiterating that it does not recognize the office as a diplomatic entity.
This follows reports that the Somaliland Liaison Office was set to officially inaugurate its operations in Nairobi on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
In a statement issued Monday evening, the Ministry clarified that the event had not received formal approval and emphasized that it does not carry the endorsement of the Kenyan government.
“The Ministry further notes with concern that the event scheduled for 27th May 2025 has not been granted approval. Its investiture with the status of a diplomatic office does not enjoy the imprimatur of the Republic of Kenya and cannot be allowed to proceed,” the statement read.
The Ministry also reaffirmed Kenya’s official recognition of the Federal Republic of Somalia as a sovereign state, underscoring its commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity.
At the same time, the statement acknowledged Kenya’s ongoing engagement with Somaliland and other regional administrations, noting that such interactions are focused on promoting peace, security, trade, and investment across the Horn of Africa.
“As Somalia continues its state-building and institutional development, the Government of Kenya—through sustained dialogue with the Federal Government of Somalia—remains committed to supporting these efforts and strengthening mutually beneficial partnerships,” the Ministry stated.
Led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, the Ministry concluded by cautioning that any attempt to present Tuesday’s event as an official diplomatic opening is misleading and unauthorized.
