Nairobi, Kenya — A rogue police officer has been arrested after a shocking video surfaced showing him shoot an unarmed man in broad daylight along Moi Avenue, outside Imenti House.

The incident, captured on camera Tuesday afternoon, has reignited public fury over rampant police brutality and sparked widespread calls for accountability.

In a swift and high-level response, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja ordered the officer’s immediate arrest and arraignment. Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed the arrest Tuesday evening.

“Following this disturbing incident, the Inspector General directed immediate action. The officer has since been apprehended and will face the full force of the law,” Nyaga said in a statement.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim had been standing near the scene as officers pursued suspected looters. Rather than detain him—if he was indeed suspected of any wrongdoing—officers reportedly beat him before one drew an anti-riot shotgun and fired at close range, dropping the man on the spot.

Panicked onlookers rushed the wounded man to hospital, expressing fury at what they called yet another senseless act of violence by law enforcement. The victim remains hospitalized and is receiving treatment.

The shooting occurred against the backdrop of tense, daylong protests in Nairobi over police killings. Demonstrators had taken to the streets demanding justice for Albert Ojwang—a teacher and blogger allegedly tortured and killed by police after being arrested in Homa Bay. Protesters are calling for the arrest and prosecution of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, who has been linked to Ojwang’s death. Lagat has since stepped aside to allow investigations to proceed.

Amid the chaos, NPS also condemned the presence of armed groups that infiltrated the demonstrations.

“We’ve identified groups of goons armed with crude weapons within the CBD. This is unacceptable. We will pursue and prosecute all criminal elements involved,” Nyaga added.
