Ruto Welcomes Dutch Royals King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima Amid Growing Criticism

Kenya is hosting His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, who arrived in the country on Monday for a three-day state visit.

The royal couple was welcomed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

In a statement, Deputy President Kindiki highlighted the long-standing and cordial relationship between the two nations, noting their collaboration across various sectors, including agriculture, trade, and development. The visit is expected to strengthen these ties and explore new opportunities for cooperation.

The visit comes amid growing criticism of the Kenyan government from local and international human rights groups regarding alleged human rights violations, during the anti-government protests.

On Tuesday morning, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were formally received at State House by President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto. Their visit is considered a significant milestone in Kenya-Netherlands relations, with discussions likely to center on advancing partnerships in areas such as climate change, trade, and governance.

Additionally, the visit offers an opportunity to deepen cultural exchanges between the two countries, further strengthening the bond between the Dutch monarchy and the Kenyan people.
