Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has officially declared a vacancy in the position previously held by nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba. The announcement was made via a gazette notice issued on Wednesday, stating that the vacancy takes effect from May 21.
The declaration follows Orwoba’s expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) over allegations of gross misconduct and violations of the party’s constitution and code of conduct.
According to UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) unanimously endorsed the expulsion after reviewing recommendations from the Disciplinary Committee. The committee found Senator Orwoba guilty of multiple misconduct charges, including making public statements that tarnished the party’s image and repeatedly failing to respond to summons for disciplinary proceedings.
In light of the expulsion, UDA has formally withdrawn its sponsorship of Orwoba and has nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi, a resident of Kimilili in Bungoma County, to fill the Senate seat.
Senator Orwoba attempted to contest the expulsion in court, but her legal challenge was dismissed by the High Court in Nairobi. In his ruling, Justice Lawrence Mugambi deemed the application procedurally flawed and therefore incompetent.
Orwoba’s removal marks another significant development in the ruling party’s efforts to enforce internal discipline and uphold its governance standards.
