The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia on Thursday approved the formation of the National Higher Education Committee, a 15-member body composed of distinguished academics and professionals. The committee was proposed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education and selected through a transparent, merit-based process aimed at strengthening governance and quality across the country’s higher education sector.
The newly appointed committee will play a central role in guiding the development, regulation, and oversight of higher education institutions nationwide.

The committee’s approval was announced during the Council’s regular weekly session, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
In the same session, ministers also reviewed the restructuring of government institutions to better align with Somalia’s federal decentralization framework and national development objectives.
Additionally, the Cabinet received briefings on ongoing security operations across the country. Members of the Council commended the Somali National Army and local allied militias for their bravery and sacrifices in efforts to liberate areas from insurgent control.
In a separate development, the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs was recognized for its enhanced delivery of Hajj services, which contributed to Somalia being ranked among the top-performing countries in pilgrim support for the 2025 Hajj season.
