Somalia Bulletin: Somalia Launches Nationwide Initiative to Tackle Cancer Crisis

Mogadishu, Somalia – February 19, 2025 – The Federal Government of Somalia has officially launched a nationwide initiative aimed at addressing the growing burden of cancer in the country. The campaign was inaugurated by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, H.E. Dr. Ali Haji Adam, in a high-level event attended by key government officials, healthcare professionals, and representatives from international health organizations.

Among the dignitaries present were the State Minister of Health, Dr. Maryama Mohamed Hussein, Members of Parliament from both houses, ambassadors, and representatives from leading global health partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), King Salman Foundation, Qatar Charity, and TİKA. Senior officials from the Ministry of Health, medical specialists, and other distinguished guests also took part in the event.

Organized under the Ministry of Health’s Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Program, the forum served as a crucial platform to evaluate the current state of cancer in Somalia and discuss strategies to curb its growing impact. Experts highlighted the alarming rise in cancer cases and stressed the need for immediate action to strengthen prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment efforts.

Medical studies presented at the event provided an in-depth analysis of the cancer situation across the country, shedding light on the challenges faced in combating the disease. Health professionals urged for coordinated efforts to enhance awareness, improve healthcare infrastructure, and ensure access to essential cancer treatment.

This initiative underscores the Somali government’s dedication to tackling non-communicable diseases and enhancing the nation’s healthcare services. With increased collaboration and sustained commitment, authorities hope to significantly reduce cancer-related deaths and improve the overall well-being of the Somali population.
