The Federal Government of Somalia has announced plans to construct a new international airport in Mogadishu, the capital city, aimed at alleviating congestion at the existing Aden Adde International Airport.
The new facility, to be known as the New Mogadishu International Airport, will be built in Haawaay, located in the Middle Shabelle region. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially launched the project by laying the foundation stone in the town of Warsheikh.
President Mohamud emphasized the strategic importance of the project, describing it as a key milestone in Somalia’s national development. “This airport is vital for our country’s progress. It strengthens both our economic infrastructure and national air transport connectivity,” he stated.
He further highlighted that while Somali forces continue to liberate areas from Al-Shabaab militants, the government is simultaneously working to rebuild critical infrastructure and restore national pride and international standing.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Hirshabelle State President Ali Gudlawe and Mogadishu Mayor Hassan Mohamed Hussein.
“This will be a modern, fully equipped airport designed to serve our citizens and accommodate international flights operating in Somalia,” President Mohamud added. He noted that the project symbolizes Somalia’s recovery and reflects the resilience and determination of its people to rebuild the nation while safeguarding its security.
