Somalia welcomes Sudanese army’s capture of Palace

The Somali government has praised the Sudanese Armed Forces for capturing the presidential palace in Khartoum, calling it a significant milestone in Sudan’s ongoing efforts to restore sovereignty after nearly two years of conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a statement released Friday, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its solidarity with Sudan and acknowledged the immense sacrifices made by the Sudanese people and their armed forces. The statement read, “Somalia sees these sacrifices as a continuation of Sudan’s long-standing struggle for national sovereignty and its proud historical legacy of rejecting foreign interference.”

The Somali government also called on all Sudanese factions to come together, emphasizing the need for unity in order to achieve the shared goals of peace, progress, and prosperity for the Sudanese people.

Sudan’s military victory on Friday represents one of its most symbolic achievements since launching a counteroffensive against the RSF in September 2023. The Sudanese Armed Forces recaptured the presidential palace in central Khartoum, which was seen as a major success in the ongoing civil war. The palace’s capture sparked celebrations among army supporters throughout the country.

Despite the recent victory, the RSF continues to hold control over parts of southern Khartoum, and the war—which began in April 2023—remains far from over. However, the loss of the presidential palace is a significant blow to the RSF’s position, coming just days after RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo released a video urging his fighters to remain steadfast and hold their ground at the palace.

The conflict between Sudan’s military and the RSF has led to widespread devastation, with ongoing violence and humanitarian concerns for the civilian population. As the situation continues to unfold, the Somali government has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and expressed hope that Sudan can soon rebuild and move toward a more stable and prosperous future.
