MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday participated in a high-level joint summit of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), convened to address the escalating security crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), his office said.
The meeting, which brought together regional leaders, focused on forging a unified approach to de-escalate the conflict in eastern DRC, where ongoing violence has displaced thousands and exacerbated humanitarian challenges.
In a statement posted on X, the Somali President’s office noted that Mohamud “took part in critical deliberations reaffirming Somalia’s support for a unified EAC-SADC approach to addressing the ongoing security conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).”
President Mohamud underscored the urgency of ending hostilities, safeguarding civilians, and ensuring unimpeded humanitarian access to conflict-affected communities in the region. “The President emphasized the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities, the protection of civilians, and the facilitation of unhindered humanitarian access to affected communities in the eastern DRC,” the statement added.
